Pat McDonald stepped up a gear at Bute Golf Club on Saturday with an emphatic victory in the April medal competition.
The Rothesay taxi driver finished four shots clear of the field with a net 61, making him a clear winner of the second division prize.
Richie Smith (20) was second on net 65 while John Kernaghan (14) and Steven Neilson (17) shared third place three shots further adrift. Kernaghan achieved the rare feat of recording a brace of birdie twos, at the third and 12th.
Leighton Thomas (10) led the first division after he returned the best best scratch score of 75 for net 65 which included birdies at the first and 11th holes.
The highlight of runner-up Jim Thom’s round came when he hit the flag pole with his approach shot at the 16th; he then putted out for a birdie three on his way to a net 67, playing off 11. David Bryden (11) was in third place on 68.
* The first silverware of the new season is up for grabs on Saturday when members compete for the James Lamont Quaich, which will be defended by Robert McKirdy.
The usual ballot will take place at the clubhouse at 8.30am.
