Members of Bute Golf Club looked back with pride at a momentous year on Saturday at the club’s annual dinner and presentation of prizes.
It was a season in which they took on the biggest challenge in the 127 years’ history of the little nine-hole course by hosting the historic inter-club Firth of Clyde Trophy tournament.
And, according to feedback from leading clubs throughout the Clyde area, the event was an outstanding success.
There was also acclaim for Bute’s top player, Graham Bolton, when he lifted the Gavin North Trophy for a fourth club championship success. The achievement maintained the scratch golfer’s one hundred per cent record, having won the title on each occasion he has entered the event.
Bolton was joined by Robert McKirdy on the winners’ rostrum on Saturday after the six-handicapper had equalled his own club record by lifting seven major trophies and four runner-up spots in another highly successful season.
While Elizabeth Speirs took the leading honours of the season for the ladies by winning the championship for a seventh time, it was Liz Archibald who dominated the rest of the summer programme with six trophy wins.
