The late challenge from John McBride in Bute Golf Club’s Winter League stableford tournament continued on Saturday when he closed in on Robert McKirdy at the top of the table.
McBride (12) led the field with a score of 40 points to boost his overall total to 305 from eight counting scores, and is now just five points adrift of last year’s winner.
A birdie three at the 18th hole gave McBride a round of 74 and one-point victory over Leighton Thomas (11), who finished in second place with a tally of 39 points which included the only two of the day at the sixth.
McKirdy (6), who was round in three-over-par 71, was third with 38 points, while Jim Thom (11) and Pat McDonald (20) were fourth and fifth with totals of 37 and 36 respectively.
