The Bute entertainment scene will reach the end of an era on Friday, July 31, when Rothesay Pavilion hosts the very last Big Dougie’s Family Party.
Big Dougie himself, Douglas Lyle, has promised more than once over the years that the next party, whenever it might be, will be his last - but this time, with the Pavilion due to close in September for up to two years for its £8m-plus refurbishment, it looks like he means it.
“There are a few reasons behind the decision,” Douglas said.
“Some folk have suggested I should do it somewhere else, but I store all the equipment in the Pavilion and I’ll have to take it out when it closes; also, wherever it happens, the venue needs to be licensed, and needs to be safe for children. The Pavilion is really the only place for it.
“The other thing is that I’ll be 65 on my next birthday, and it’s got to come to an end at some point. Maybe the closure of the Pavilion makes now the ideal time.”
