Rothesay pool’s opening hours to be cut

ROTHESAY Leisure Pool’s opening times are to be cut back from next month, Argyll and Bute Council has announced.

From October 1, open swimming will no longer be available between 2.30pm and 5pm on weekdays, while weekend opening will be reduced from seven to five hours per day, from 10am-3pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

Weekday afternoons will be used for school swimming, swimming lessons, water-based fitness classes, lifeguard training and the ‘Big Splash’ programme (more of the latter in this week’s Buteman).

Weekday opening times (9am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 7.30am on Tuesday and Thursday) will not change, and the pool will continue to shut at 8pm from Monday to Friday.

In a statement the authority said the changes were made following reductions to its leisure budget and feedback from customers.

Councillor Rory Colville, spokesperson for the third sector and communities, said: “I understand that some people may be inconvenienced by these changes and I’m sorry if they are.

“However it is vital that the council deliver its services in the most efficient way it can.

“This means that we can use the pool for those groups who will benefit most, for example those people waiting to get involved with our learn to swim programme.

“It’s important that we increase the number of children in this scheme and, by running it on week day afternoons, we can decrease waiting times.

“There is also the additional benefit of running the Learn to Swim scheme and schools swimming programme with minimal disruption to the public.”
