Rothesay bus route to be axed this weekend

SUMMER bus services over Canada Hill will cease to operate this weekend due to cuts in Argyll and Bute Council’s public transport budget.

Despite pleas from regular users of the service, the axe is to fall on the non-school journeys on the 488 route, serving Roseland Caravan Park, Eastlands Road and High Craigmore.

The last day of operation for the 12.55pm, 2.55pm and 4.55pm departures from Guildford Square will be this Saturday, July 9.

The only journeys via Canada Hill after Saturday will be the schooldays-only services leaving Guildford Square at 8.38am and 2.55pm.

In the news release announcing the cuts, the council states that only “a short walk” separates Roseland Caravan Park from alternative services via The Bush, and Eastlands Road residents from the hourly service along Mountstuart Road.

Argyll and Bute’s budget for supporting public transport was reduced from £726,035 to £275,000 as a result of budget cuts for 2011-12.

The cuts have also led to the cancellation of the summer Sunday services between Rothesay and Dunoon, which were axed at the end of May.
