The late designer behind the rare Grade II-listed Penfold post box – one of which is situated outside the Isle of Bute Discovery Centre, Rothesay – has been recognised as one of the most influential surveyors of the past 150 years by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Born 190 years ago, John Wornham Penfold’s design for the British hexagonal post box was commissioned by the Post Office in 1866 and created a national standard for letter boxes. Only 20 of the earliest designs of Penfolds exist in the UK, including the one on Bute.
