Highlands and Islands Labour MSP Rhoda Grant has congratulated the people of Bute as they prepare a warm Scottish welcome for Syrian refugees coming to their community.
“The people of Bute seem to be well on the way to preparing for the warm welcome for the refugees that will help them settle into the community,” said Mrs Grant.
“A house in a safe environment may be what is needed, but it is the everyday things that will make these families feel that they have a home in the community.
“A place to meet is being organised for them and the team of volunteers that will be on hand to help with things like shopping and overcoming the language barrier will be, I am sure, of immense value.
“For families the happiness of their children will be their priority. The schools will be well prepared for the new arrivals and the video prepared by pupils will help ease the transition into a new and strange environment.
“Whilst the Government agreed to take part in the Refugee Resettlement Programme, its success or failure will be decided by ordinary people in communities like Bute doing extraordinary things.”
