Indigenous leaders from Columbia have been on Bute as part of a two week visit to Scotland to learn about community empowerment.

The Misak were displaced from their lands and almost disappeared as a people. Over the last 40 years, they have reclaimed their territory, their culture and their future.

Misak leaders, Jeremias Tunubala and Liliana Pechene Muelas, have been holding events with communities on Mull, Ulva, Eigg and Skye, as well as residential training on Bute. They will also hold an event at the Scottish Parliament on May 8.

“We hope to share our experiences with Scottish communities engaged in reclaiming memory, reviving knowledge, and rebuilding community,” stated Misak leader Liliana Pechene.
