A group of Bute teenagers kicked off what they hope will be the first in a series of social events aimed specifically at their age group with a Halloween disco in Rothesay this week.
The project was initiated by Argyll and Bute Council’s local community learning and development team through the Bute Youth Forum, though all the hard work for Thursday’s event was done by a group of pupils at Rothesay Academy - Jamie Charlton, Dylan Wilson, Liam Neeson, Nathan Roberts and Liam Graham, under the banner ‘Lads Against Drugs’ - who made all the arrangements for the venue, music, publicity and catering.
The aim of the project is to show young people on Bute - and, if the scheme is a success, elsewhere too - that having a good time in your teens without resorting to drink or drugs is much easier than you might think.
“We spent the two week school holiday working on organising it and learning about drugs and their effects,” Dylan told The Buteman.
“We’re hoping to do events like this once a month, and there’s going to be a girls’ group set up next year too.”
