The picture above shows the giant insect which buzzed in to the home of Rothesay resident Sue Brooks on Monday afternoon.
Sue prudently captured the creature under a glass before calling us to see whether we could help identify her unusual - and more than a little unnerving - visitor.
Unfortunately we were none the wiser, particularly after sifting through a swathe of internet scare stories from earlier this year warning that Britain could be under threat from an invasion of killer Asian hornets.
“I didn’t know what it was,” Sue told us. “I had a look on the internet but that wasn’t much help.
Comparing Sue’s image here to that of an Asian hornet, we’re pretty sure they’re not the same - though they are commonly mistaken for the less dangerous European hornet, itself still a pretty rare visitor to the UK’s gardens.
If you know your insects and can identify Sue’s visitor - whether it’s a hornet or something else entirely - please let us know by dropping an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks in advance!
