Firefighters and police were called to a report of a blaze at the Isle of Bute Sailing Club’s premises in Rothesay shortly after 3pm on Sunday.
The emergency services were alerted after clouds of dark smoke were seen billowing from beneath the clubhouse in Ardbeg Road while children and adult members of the club were taking part in races in Rothesay Bay.
Retained firefighters from the Rothesay community fire station quickly discovered the smoke was coming from a supervised bonfire on the shore directly underneath the building.
No-one was injured in the fire, which was extinguished within a few minutes of the fire crews’ arrival.
Lorna Campbell from IBSC told The Buteman: “It was a controlled fire, but no-one outwith the club knew it was controlled.
“Some of the boys were clearing out old wood and bits of boats and other rubbish. It was all quite controlled but the authorities didn’t know that.”
