LOCAL charity Beachwatch Bute was delighted recently after the local Ardmaleish Boatbuilding Company offered to breathe new life into the charity’s much-needed tractor box.
The box, which was bought back in 1998 to assist with the removal of marine litter from the island’s beaches, had fallen into a very bad state of repair due to the effects of time and the weather.
Beachwatch ranger Sandra MacMillan told The Buteman: “It was not safe to use due to the condition of the floor, which had almost rusted through completely and was a sorry looking sight.
“We took it to Ardmaleish Boatyard as a last resort to ask their advise and Ewan Ferguson said to just leave it and he would see what he could do – and not imagining that anything could be done for it, we left it for a couple of days.
“When Ewan asked me to come and get it, I was blown away by what he had achieved.
“They had put a new floor in it, made of a composite plastic as used on fish farms, and had blasted off all the rust and flaking paint.
“They had repainted it with a special non rusting coating. I really didn’t recognise it as ours at first!
“Ewan and the boatyard’s staff had kindly carried out the work as a favour to Beachwatch Bute and we are very grateful for their support.
“Being able to use the tractor box again has meant that we can utilise our tractor more and access beaches that might have been out of the reach of our 4x4 vehicle.
It also makes the removal of heavy objects much easier as they can be rolled into the box.
“Beachwatch Bute is very fortunate that we have such support from the local community, and with this help we can continue to keep Bute’s beaches beautiful.”
Beachwatch Bute has also recently set up a Just Text Giving Account and to give a donation of between £1 and £10, please text BWBC12 to text number 70070.
