Bute is “particularly well placed” to welcome refugees fleeing the mounting crisis in Syria, according to one of the island’s councillors.
Isobel Strong’s comments come as Argyll and Bute Council pledged to welcome at least 20 Syrian refugees to the area - joining many other Scottish local authorities in offering a safe haven to those fleeing terror in the Middle East.
Councillor Strong said: “Scotland is a rich country which can afford to welcome refugees and the island of Bute in particular should be able to provide for a fair number.
“Bute is well placed to take in more people with its declining population, empty houses available from both social and private landlords and capacity in our schools.”
