Bute councillor set for provost’s role

BUTE councillor Isobel Strong is set to be the new provost of Argyll and Bute Council in the authority’s new SNP-led administration.

Councillor Strong, who was first elected to the old Bute Central ward in 1999 and has been one of the Isle of Bute ward’s three representatives since 2007, is one of 20 members of the coalition of SNP and independent councillors formed in the wake of last week’s local elections.

She was also depute provost and education spokesperson when the SNP shared power with the Alliance of Independent Councillors between May 2007 and November 2010.

Bute’s other SNP councillor, Robert Macintyre, is likely to become the new chair of the Bute and Cowal area committee – although the committee’s membership will not be fully known until after the result of the final ward election, taking place in Dunoon on Thursday – and deputy spokesperson for health, wellbeing and communities.
