Bute Advice Centre backs merger plan

BUTE Advice Centre has agreed to merge with the Argyll and Bute Citizens’ Advice Bureau (ABCAB) – despite initial concerns over a possible loss of the local organisation’s identity.

The decision to merge was taken after the centre was “strongly advised” by its main financial supporter, the Big Lottery Fund, of the benefits of having a single advice organisation for the whole of Argyll and Bute.

Bute Advice Centre assistant manager Julie Semple told The Buteman: “Nothing has yet been signed and sealed, although we are very hopeful that it will be.

“In years gone by our management committee had looked at the possibility of a merger, but couldn’t see any real benefits from it, and had concerns about the diminution of our service and the possibility that as part of a bigger organisation we might be downsized.

“The Big Lottery Fund asked us to look again at the idea in more detail, and when we did, and started having talks with ABCAB, it became very clear that those concerns were unfounded.”
