Warning over fire hazard household goods

Bute’S community councillors heard this week of a renewed warning over a potential fire hazard caused by faulty household appliances.

The warning over 632,000 faulty dishwashers sold under the Bosch, Siemens and Neff brands was first issued in July 2011, but it was revealed this week that the owners of 479,000 machines have not responded to the alert - potentially leaving their homes at risk.

Bosch is undertaking a free in-home repair programme for the affected dishwashers, which were manufactured between 1999 and early 2005.

The affected dishwashers are certain models in the batch number range from FD 7901 to FD 8504. Models outwith the above batch number range are not affected.

The batch number can be found either engraved on the top of the machine or on a sticker on the left hand side of the inner part of the door.

If your dishwasher’s batch number falls within the above range, you should visit the Repair Action website (click on the link to the right of this article) and enter your model number and batch number to verify whether your machine is affected. You’ll then be able to arrange your free-of-charge repair immediately.

Alternatively, you can contact the Repair Action call centre on Freephone 0800 023 4881 (opening hours Mon-Fri 8am-8pm and Sat-Sun 8am-5pm).

Wednesday’s community council meeting also heard of a potential fire risk from certain Beko tumble dryers produced between May and October 2012.

To find out if your machine is one of those affected, you need to check the serial number - to do so, open the dryer’s main door and look for the silver rating plate, which should be located just below the main opening.

The number on the plate that follows ‘S/N’ is the serial number; you should contact Beko if the first two digits are 12 and the last two digits are 05, 06, 07, 08, 09 or 10.

If your machine’s serial number fits that criteria, you should go to Beko’s dryer safety website - the link is also to the right of this article - or call Beko on 0800 917 2018 (also a freephone number), between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday and 10am-4pm Saturday and Sunday.

If your dryer is affected you should unplug it immediately and stop using it. Beko will fix faulty dryers free of charge.
