The popularity of Bute as a water sports venue has been underlined by the news that a sea kayaking festival, taking place around the island later this year, is fully booked - nearly five months before the event.
The organisers of the second Women’s Scottish Sea Kayak Festival, to be based on the island from August 30 to September 1, posted a message on their website on Friday to say that the last few places at the event had been snapped up.
The festival programme will include moderate and challenging day paddles as well as sessions on rescues and towing, strokes and manoeuvring, trip planning theory and practice and a series of fun games aimed at building participants’ confidence.
The organisers are also hoping to involve the RNLI in a flare demonstration and session on sea kayak rescue.
The festival is supported by local firm Kayak Bute and is itself supporting the RNLI and Beachwatch Bute, the charity set up to keep the island’s shoreline free from marine litter.
