Five vocalists and three instrumentalists took to the floor at Rothesay Joint Campus on Thursday evening to compete in the Rotary Club of Rothesay’s annual Young Musician of the Year competition.
This year’s adjudicators - Father Michael Hutson, Lyn Bulloch, and Tim Saul - had a tough task in front of them, as the standard was very high.
The vocalists competing for this year’s shield were Layla Templeton, Amber Gillett, Nicola Graham, Beth Swan and Alison MacCallum. The instrumentalists were pianists Louis Ware and Elizabeth Harley, and on saxophone, Michael Sweeney.
Strong performances from the young musicians made the decision a particularly difficult one to make, with Fr Hutson commenting that there was a very small difference of around one-and-a-half points between all the competitors.
With scores tallied and comments scrutinised, the winning vocalist was Layla Templeton, and the winning instrumentalist was Michael Sweeney, both of whom will go through to the district final which will be held in Glasgow in the new year.
