Bute’s former instrumental instructor will be performing with the National Symphony Orchestra of the United Arab Emirates next month.

Tony Spencer, who moved to the island 14 years ago to take up the post of instrumental instructor for Bute’s primary and secondary school children, will be joining the NSO in Dubai for ‘A Night at the Movies III’ performance which will be televised in the United Arab Emirates, under the direction of conductor Andrew Berryman.

Featuring music classics from ‘Gladiator’. ‘Pink Panther’, ‘Star Wars’ and Disney’s ‘Fantasia’ which includes excerpts from ‘Peer Gynt’, ‘Danse Macabre’ and ‘Pines of Rome’, the evening will also feature the world premiere of a new concert version of James Griffiths’ film score ‘The Drift’, which was written especially for the NSO.

Tony told us: “My son, Chris, is principal clarinet with the National Symphony Orchestra and they were looking for another clarinetist to join them.

“I was going out there in October for a family holiday anyway, but it’s now turned into a busman’s holiday!”
