Bute jazz singer Jenny Brown has died at the age of 88 after a long illness.

Jenny, who was born in 1927 in the Tiger Bay area of Cardiff - on the same street that Shirley Bassey would come into the world ten years later - passed away in Rothesay on the evening of Sunday, November 29.

Jenny moved to Bute at the age of six to live with her mother and grandmother; a lifelong fan of jazz music, she made numerous visits to New Orleans to take part in the city’s trad jazz festivals.

On Bute, however, she was best known for her local performances with the late Phil Mason and his Bute Jazz Friends, and for leading the street parade at the Isle of Bute Jazz Festival, which began in 1988 and still enjoys a reputation as one of Scotland’s premier jazz gatherings.
