VIDEO: Honouring the haggis at Bute’s first Burns supper

The annual celebration on Bute of the life and work of Robert Burns began in traditional fashion this week with the Ballianlay Burns Supper at the Straad Hall.

Our video shows Colin McArthur giving the famous Address to a Haggis at the start of the evening; the other guest speakers were chairman and former Rothesay Academy depute rector Iain White; Stewart Shaw, who gave the Immortal Memory; Gerry McGuigan, who delivered the Toast to the Lassies; Mhairi McArthur, who replied on the Lassies’ behalf; and Ballianlay WRI president Meg Young.

Musical entertainment came from Jimmy Duncan, John Morrison and Alison MacCallum, while former Rothesay Academy pupil Daniel McDermott, now studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, brought his bagpipes back to Bute to herald the arrival of both the top table and the ceremonial haggis.
