VIDEO: Jazz gig kicks off Bute’s musical year

Waiting for Video...

The new musical year on Bute began in traditional fashion on Thursday with the popular New Year Jazz gig at the Victoria Hotel in Rothesay.

A firm fixture on the local musical calendar for many years, the concert this year featured the Tim Saul Quartet - with Tim himself on keyboards, Paul McKay on bass, David Gray on drums and Alec Mack on guitar - plus several guest performers.

The latter category featured John Denman on vibraphones and Robert Henderson on trumpet - the latter making a welcome return to the island after wowing audiences at last year’s Isle of Bute Jazz Festival and a guest slot with Tim’s group in October.

Also on the guest list on Thursday were two new local voices on the island’s jazz scene, Anna Harrison and Daniel Sweet, who both won loud applause from the packed-out audience and are sure to be warmly welcomed at any future performances.

Thursday’s gig was the latest in the series of monthly winter jazz concerts at the Victoria organised by the Isle of Bute Jazz Festival - next up is Havana Swing on Sunday, February 2.
