Pipe bands’ Bute Highland Games discount renewed

Pipe bands travelling to this year's Bute Highland Games by coach will again be able to take advantage of a generous discount provided by Caledonian MacBrayne, Games chairman Gordon Sutherland has announced.

Pipe bands travelling to this year's Bute Highland Games by coach will again be able to take advantage of a generous discount provided by Caledonian MacBrayne, Games chairman Gordon Sutherland has announced.

Pipe bands at this year’s Bute Highland Games have received a boost after Caledonian MacBrayne agreed to renew a discount scheme for bands travelling to the event by coach.

News that the discount is to continue was confirmed by Games chairman Gordon Sutherland in a look ahead to the 2014 event, which takes place on Saturday, August 23.

“This discount is vitally important for attracting pipe bands to travel to Bute to compete in the Games,” Mr Sutherland said, “and the organising committee are extremely grateful to CalMac for this support.

“Local organisers were concerned that the changes which are taking place at the Cowal Gathering could adversely affect our own Games, however these fears

have proved groundless, as we have large entries in all the events, including the pipe band competitions.”

The pipe band competition at this year’s Cowal Gathering, which takes place on the weekend after the Bute Games, will no longer have official status as one of the five ‘majors’ in the piping world.
