Author Myra Duffy, the creator of the Bute murder mysteries featuring inadvertent amateur sleuth Alison Cameron, returned to Rothesay this week to give a sneak preview of the latest book in the series.

Grave Matters at St Blane’s sees Alison back on Bute to write a guide to a planned theme park at the south end of the island - but it isn’t long before she stumbles on something rather darker than a rollercoaster ride.

Myra read several passages from her new book before answering questions at local bookshop Print Point - some of them from readers very familiar with the series, others completely new to Alison and her investigations.

Myra also brought with her her very first story, written in a school jotter when she was just eight years old - a tale sadly marred by the presence of a great big ink blot over the ending.

“I took a break from writing while I was at university,” she said, “but since then I’ve had a lot of non fiction published, mostly about managing a small business.

“But I really wanted to write fiction. I started the Alison Cameron series with The House at Ettrick Bay, but that was just by a fluke - the idea, and in fact the first line, came into my head while I was walking with my husband along the beach at Ettrick Bay. And people liked it, and so I wrote Last Ferry to Bute, and it’s continued from there.”

* You can read our review of Grave Matters at St Blane’s in the July 4 issue of The Buteman, on sale now - and we’ll have more from Myra in our next print edition, on sale from Thursday, July 10.
