Historic Scotland held an introduction to archery at Rothesay Castle on Sunday, July 13, 2014.

Rothesay Castle hosted an afternoon of medieval archery on Sunday, giving visitors to the facility the chance to try their hand at the centuries-old pursuit.

Archery may have moved from the fighting fields to the sporting arena in the last few hundred years, but the skills needed to do it well are still essentially the same, and teacher Graham Hamilton - complete with period costume - was on hand to give a guiding hand to all those keen to have a go.

Among the first participants on the day were visitor Bert Wilde from Manchester and the Wallace family - mum Elaine, dad Gary and children Ryan (11) and Ellie (7) - as well as The Buteman’s correspondent, who made a sharp exit before anyone noticed his laughably poor attempts to get the arrows anywhere near the target...
