A window in the weather failed to produce a significant improvement in performances last Saturday as Bute Golf Club’s Winter League moved into its final stages.
Competitors may have been unnerved by unaccustomed bright sunlight on a relatively calm morning as only Leighton Thomas and John McBride took advantage of the conditions.
Thomas (11) led the way with a solid round which produced one birdie at the seventh on his way to a tally of 39 points. McBride (13) amassed 21 points on an outward half boosted by a birdie three at the seventh followed by a magnificent eagle two at the ninth -- but a disappointing back nine of 17 points left him one behind his playing partner.
The rest of the field were well adrift with Richie Smith (20) in third place on 34 points and Stuart Wilson (15), Mike Whaley (20), Steve Neilson (18) and Andy Docherty (9) all on 33 points. Although scoring just 30 points John Kernaghan had the satisfaction of achieving the second two of the day at the par-three third hole.
The three leading players overall failed to improve on their positions, but Thomas climbed into fourth place while McBride, who has a number of low totals to discard, also made a significant forward move. The top-of-the-table placings in the competition with the best eight scores counting are: A. Docherty 322 points, G. McArthur 310, D. Bryden 304, L. Thomas 296, J. Kernaghan 295, R. More 294, J. McBride 293, R. Smith 289, M. Whaley 287.
The tournament, sponsored by Stephen Thomas of Optimize Financial Solutions, Ltd., continues tomorrow (Saturday) with the usual 8.30am ballot at the clubhouse.
