Proving that he doesn’t really need a full bag of clubs, Robert Mckirdy won the Captain’s Day ‘three clubs and putter’ competition at Bute Golf Club on Saturday.

His total of 41 points put him comfortably in first place to win the prize, presented by Steve Neilson.

This Saturday sees the start of the club’s Winter League, sponsored by Stephen Thomas of Optimize Financial Solutions. The club is very grateful for Stephen’s continued support.

All those taking part should pay the entry fee of £5 before play. The usual morning draw for partners will take place, but players can take part at any time of the day if they have a partner.

Cards, entry and sweep fees should be posted in the box at the gate. The competition is scheduled to last 26 weeks, weather permitting, but eight returns are required before players join the running score board. Scoring is by stableford format.

Newcomers to the competition or the club should note that some of the players go to Kingarth Hotel after play for a snack lunch.

The annual prize-giving dinner has been fixed for Saturday, November 14 at Kingarth Hotel. Trophy holders should by now have returned their silverware to club secretary Frazer Robinson at 32 Marine Place.

* Liz Archibald won the Breakthrough Cancer competition and September medal in Bute Golf Club’s ladies’ section, with donations raising more than £80 for the charity.

Elizabeth Speirs won the last nine-hole stableford competition of the season, played on September 15.
