Island resident and Bute Wheelers member, Victoria O’Reilly, took part in the Dynamo Full Moon Sportive - a 109 mile cycle from Glasgow to Dunoon - on July 4.

Travelling through Helensburgh, Arrochar, Strachur, Ottery Ferry and Tighnabruiach, Victoria told us: “I was attracted to the event given the route. I live on Bute and have cycled round the last sections many times, but never up the Rest and be Thankful!

“Thinking back I was perhaps too laid back in my preparations for the event.

“I have competed in a few all-night events in my time including ultra marathon racing, some of which involve running through the night and sometimes even two nights so cycling through the night wasn’t stressing me too much until I walked up to the start line.

“The thought of moving at speed in the dark began to worry me particularly so as I hadn’t completed any night time practice runs as advised and to make matters worse I’d only just purchased the lights a few days beforehand so didn’t even know how good they would be, so my very laid back approach to the event turned into a mild state of anxiety!

“However my worries soon disappeared a few miles in.”
