Bute Shinty Club’s first team saw their hopes of adding a sixth Balliemore Cup to the club’s roll of honour dashed by a penalty shoot-out loss away to North Division One leaders Strathglass on Saturday.

James Craig gave the islanders the lead in an often physical clash, but Barry Phimister levelled for the hosts on 41 minutes.

Neither side could manage a winner in regulation time, or extra time, and a remarkable penalty shoot-out saw the two keepers save nine of the ten attempts, with Strathglass’s last by Donald Fraser the only one to find the net.

* Bute’s second team were idle on Saturday after their league match at home to Tayforth was postponed; the game will be rescheduled for a later date.

* This Saturday, April 16, both Bute teams are scheduled to play away from home: the club’s first team face Kyles Athletic in Tighnabruaich at 12 noon in the quarter-finals of the Celtic Society Cup, while the second team have a South Division Two fixture away to Oban Lorn at 2.30pm.
