Shinty: Macaulay draw hands Bute trip to Glasgow Mid Argyll

The first shinty fixtures of 2014 were announced on Saturday when the draw for the Artemis Macaulay Cup handed Bute’s first team an away tie against Glasgow Mid Argyll.

The two sides will meet at Peterson Park in Yoker in the first round of the competition, on a date yet to be decided, with a home fixture against Inveraray or Kyles Athletic awaiting the winners in round two.

Bute and GMA spent most of the 2013 season locked in a battle for the South Division One championship title, with the Glasgow club emerging victorious after winning the two league games between the sides - 1-0 in Glasgow in August and 3-2 in Rothesay in the final match of the season on September 7.

The full draw for the competition, in which north and south teams are kept apart until the final, is as follows.

First round: Inveraray v Kyles Athletic, Taynuilt v Glenorchy, Aberdour v Oban Camanachd, Glasgow Mid Argyll v Bute, Kilmallie v Newtonmore, Lovat v Kinlochshiel, Fort William v Glenurquhart, Lochaber v Kingussie.

Second round: Taynuilt/Glenorchy v Aberdour/Oban Camanachd, Glasgow Mid Argyll/Bute v Inveraray/Kyles Athletic, Lochaber/Kingussie v Kilmallie/Newtonmore, Lovat/Kinlochshiel v Fort William/Glenurquhart.

Semi-finals: Taynuilt/Glenorchy/Aberdour/Oban Camanachd v Glasgow Mid Argyll/Bute/Inveraray/Kyles Athletic, Lochaber/Kingussie/Kilmallie/Newtonmore v Lovat/Kinlochshiel/Fort William/Glenurquhart.

The 2013 tournament was won by Kyles Athletic, who beat Newtonmore 4-3 in a thrilling final; the 2014 final,will take place at Mossfield Park in Oban on Saturday, August 23.
