Shinty: Bute lose out at the death in top-of-the-table clash

Nick Lavin’s 90th-minute winner condemned Bute’s first team to a 1-0 defeat away to Glasgow Mid Argyll on Saturday.

Both sides went into the top-of-the-table clash at Peterson Park with 20 points from 12 league games - but it was the hosts who took the honours in the first of two games between the sides which will almost certainly have a huge say in the destiny of the South Division One title.

Both sides went into Saturday’s game well on course for the top-three finish which will secure a place in the new National Division One in 2014, but Lavin’s strike enabled Mid Argyll to bounce back from their surprise loss to Glenorchy seven days previously - and inflicted Bute’s first league defeat since March 16, when the islanders lost 5-4 away to Aberdour in only their second league match of the season.

The second half of the Bute-GMA double-header is due to take place on September 7 - but Saturday’s result means that if both teams win their other two outstanding fixtures, scheduled for August 24 and 31, Bute will go into that clash needing not just to win, but to overhaul a substantially inferior goal difference, to snatch the title from Mid Argyll’s grasp.
