Bute Shinty Club’s second team fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Tayforth on Saturday - but the islanders subjected the Edinburgh-based club’s South Division Two championship challenge to a stern test in the process.

Tayforth went into the game - their last league match of the season - knowing that a win was essential to keep alive their hopes of beating Inveraray to the title, but they suffered an early upset when veteran Ali Carmichael opened the scoring for Bute after only three minutes.

And Bute were good value for a lead they preserved until half time, though Tayforth finished the first 45 minutes strongly - and the visitors levelled matters less than 60 seconds after the restart courtesy of Steven Thomson.

Thomson’s second put the visitors ahead seven minutes later, but clear-cut chances in the second half were at a premium in conditions more suited to water polo than shinty - though Bute missed out on an opportunity to level the match on 77 minutes when Hector Whitelaw sent a penalty wide of the mark after Carmichael was tripped by a Tayforth defender.
