Bute Shinty Club’s second team saw their good form of recent games well and truly desert them on Saturday after a disappointing performance resulted in a 5-2 home defeat against their Glasgow Mid Argyll counterparts.

The undoing of the island side lay in an uncharacteristically sluggish first half display and in two quick-fire goals by the visitors just before half time: Neil Beaton had already given Mid Argyll a 27th-minute lead by that stage, but his second on 41 minutes and Jack Berg’s strike two minutes later left Bute with a mountain to climb after the break.

Ruairaidh Soane’s well-struck drive reduced the deficit shortly after the restart, but a quick GMA counter-attack allowed Lewis Miller to restore the visitors’ three-goal advantage with an angled shot.

Bute pulled a further goal back through Stewart Stirling with quarter of an hour to play, and a third would have set up a grandstand finish, but instead Kyle Arnot made certain of the points for the visitors with four minutes to play.
