Bute Shinty Club’s second team slipped to a 2-0 defeat against local rivals Kyles Athletic in the island side’s first home match of the season on Saturday.

The Tighnabruaich men took the lead inside five minutes, a one-two with Roddy MacColl inside Bute’s area offering Scott MacDonald the opportunity to slot the ball past Bute keeper John Whitelaw from an acute angle.

And the visitors went on to create the majority of the game’s clear-cut chances, with only poor finishing and some fine saves by Whitelaw keeping the deficit at a single goal.

But the home side, whose ranks included several players taking part in their first competitive shinty match on home turf, kept plugging away, and didn’t concede the second goal until injury time at the end of the match when David Martin, who had missed a penalty just moments earlier, dispossessed Whitelaw at the by-line before calmly passing the ball into the net.
