Three Bute rugby players travelled to Dunoon on Saturday to bolster the ranks of Renfrew RFC in their RBS West League Four game against Cowal.

Thomas Connor and Sam Lawrie held up the Renfrew front row with their stature and ball-carrying ability, but the real star of the show - from both a Bute and Renfrew point of view - was Paul Toop, who started at outside centre and played in almost every position in the backs during the course of the game, and scored both Renfrew’s tries to boot!

Sadly for the Bute trio their efforts weren’t enough to stave off a heavy defeat for the visitors, with Cowal romping to an 84-12 victory - but for the Bute players the important thing was the chance to get in some valuable game time in a competitive environment, particularly after the cancellation of their scheduled friendly away to Bannockburn.
