Bute’s rugby players have opted to join forces with other clubs from Argyll to bring competitive league rugby back to the area.

The new club, with a pool of players from Bute, Mid Argyll, Islay, Kintyre and the second XVs of Oban Lorne and Isle of Mull, will compete in the SRU’s BT West League Division 4, the first rung of Scottish club rugby’s league ladder, in 2014-15.

The team will be nomadic, with the home venue alternated around the various constituent clubs, meaning competitive league rugby will return to Rothesay, albeit on an occasional basis, for the first time since 2010-11.

Bute’s players will still play as Bute Rugby Club when possible, in particular hosting touring squads, and with that in mind Bute’s first pre-season action takes place on Saturday, August 2, in the form of a three-way festival with Grangemouth and Allan Glen’s.

The event is part of the RBS Rugbyforce Scotland weekend, and will also include a barbecue and DJ, with a family tag rugby festival to follow on Sunday, August 3.

Pre-season training for Bute’s players is already under way, with sessions being held from 6-7pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Argyll and Bute’s league opponents in 2014-15 will be Cowal, Police Scotland Glasgow, Hyndland, Moffat, Clydesdale, Shawlands and Glasgow East. The new club’s first league fixture is against Cowal in Dunoon on September 13.
