The final of the Stephen Thomas Optimize Champion of Champions Cup will be played in the Struan Bar this Thursday, May 29, between Golf Club 1 and league champions Kingarth 1.
The Golf Club team booked their place with a 5-4 victory over Struan 1 in last Thursday’s semi-final, while Kingarth 1 had a rather more straightforward passage thanks to a 5-1 win over their Kingarth 2 pubmates.
Meanwhile, Chez Harrison won the 2014 open singles title, sponsored by the Galatea Bar, with a 6-2 win over Richard Reid in Monday’s final at the Galatea.
The first frame of this best-of-eleven final could easily have gone either way: both players missed balls that could have won them the frame, but Chez eventually took the honours and went on to win the next two to open up a sizeable lead.
Richard, however, wasn’t going to let the match run away from him, and cleared up well in the fourth to stop the rot - only for Chez to take the initiative in the fifth to lead 4-1.
With the pressure now on, Richard couldn’t afford to lose another, and pulled off a great finish to make the scoreline more reasonable at 4-2.
Chez hit back hard and took the seventh frame to put him on the hill needing only one more for victory. The next became very tactical in the latter half of the frame with Chez eventually coming out on top to win the frame, the match and the open singles title.
