The start of a new season for local curlers saw a Bute rink head to Greenock’s Waterfront on Wednesday, September 21.

Their opponents on the day were a Newark rink.

The Bute side of Donald Kinnear (skip), Colin Sharp, Helen Hay and Bill Stein lost the first end by 1 shot but took 2 shots at the next end to go into the lead.

Newark ladies’ continued to add to their score in the third and fourth ends to lead by 5 shots to 2 going into the next end.

Donald’s side pulled 1 shot back at the fifth end only to see Newark add 2 to their score at the penultimate end.

Trailing by 7 shots to 2 going into the final end was not an ideal position to be in, however, Donald and his rink took 3 shots at this end to make the score more respectable at 7 shots to 6 for Newark.

The following Wednesday found the local club struggling to raise two rinks due to holiday and work commitments.

However, undaunted Colin Sharp and Nancy Kinnear took on Donald Kinnear, Helen Hay and Alec Robertson in a competition for the Millbank Trophy at the Waterfront.

Colin made a better start to the game taking the first end by 2 shots but the next 5 ends saw Donald’s side score steadily to finish with 7 shots giving them victory in the first club competition of the season.

The next game will be a day league fixture.
