The two teams who will play in the final of the Isle of Bute Pool League’s Shield competition, sponsored by the Golfers Bar, were decided last Thursday and Friday in two very exciting semi-final ties.

Played out in the Golfers Bar, the first tie was between Galatea 2 and Struan 1.

Two of the Struan’s top players, Chez Harrison and Gavin Wilson, won the first two frames, but he third frame went to the Galatea very early on e when David Speirs inadvertently potted the black ball as he tried to split the pack against Mike McHardy.

Frame four saw the Struan’s Alec Greer beat his son Shaun, but the tables turned from then on as Alan Kane took out Robbie Docherty in the fifth before Richie More cleared all seven balls, followed by the black, to square the tie.

Richie repeated that superb feat in the first doubles game to give the Galatea team the lead for the first time, before Mike, teaming up with Shaun in the doubles, doubled the black at an acute angle to the opposite corner pocket to defeat Gavin and David and secure the win.

Friday saw the second semi-final between Golfers 2 and the Golf Club, with Harry Owen of the Golfers defeating Danny Kane in the first game before Tommy Walmsley failed to capitalise on a good chance, allowing Jason Mackay to square the tie.

John McBride was next up for the Golf Club and never looked like losing against Harry Haw, and the Golf Club team increased their lead to 3-1 as Iain Simpson beat Edith MacDonald.

Ryan McKirdy had a little luck after his opponent Ryan Lambertini missed and left an easy black to the corner pocket, leaving the Golf Club player with a straightforward finish to give his team a 4-1 advantage and needing only one more game to win.

David Reynolds faced Golf Club’s Andrew Docherty in the last singles game, and David gave away two shots at a crucial point, allowing Andrew to take full advantage and tie up a 5-1 win for the Golf Club team.

The Shield final between Golf Club and Galatea 2 will take place in the Golfers Bar on Thursday, April 7.
