Bute Shinty Club’s first team chalked up their first league win of 2014 on Saturday - in their last home match of the Marine Harvest National Division campaign.

Veteran Hector Whitelaw, called up from the club’s second team to bolster the senior ranks, gave the hosts the lead with a penalty midway through the first half at the Meadows, and though Caberfeidh enjoyed more of the possession, some solid Bute defending and a couple of excellent stops by keeper Kevin Queen kept the islanders’ lead intact at the break.

And it was a similar story in the second half, before John MacCallum fired home from a narrow angle on 70 minutes to double the home side’s advantage.

Neil Rose finally found a way through Bute’s stuffy defence with a well-struck shot ten minutes from time, but the hosts dug deep in the closing stages to end a disappointing home campaign on a positive note.
