Cycling: Countdown is on to Bute weekend festival

Cyclists from all over Scotland are expected to converge on Bute next weekend for the Bute Wheelers’ annual festival of cycling on September 15 and 16.

The two-day festival begins with one of the most distinctive events on the Scottish cycling calendar - the Serpentine Hillclimb, up one of the twistiest streets in the world, on the Saturday morning, and also features a 21-mile 2-up circuit of the island that afternoon, a ten-mile time trial on the Sunday morning and a 40-mile road race around two laps of the island on the Sunday afternoon.

The Bute September weekend is one of the oldest cycling events in Scotland, having first been held before the Second World War; in its heyday the entry list for the event reached well into three figures.
