The annual Bute cycling festival organised by the local Bute Wheelers club drew to a close on Sunday with an incredibly close finish in the weekend’s final event - the round-the-island APR road race.

Less than a second separated men’s winner Dan Smith from second-placed Andrew Whitehall - both crossed the finishing line in Rothesay in a time of one hour and 52 minutes, more than a minute ahead of the chasing pack.

The first lady across the line was Genevieve Whitson, whose victory secured the ladies’ ‘yellow jersey’ prize for the best-performing female cyclist across the weekend’s four events.

The gents’ yellow jersey went to Jamie Kennedy of the Glasgow Couriers club, who finished eighth in Sunday afternoon’s race.

Sunday’s first event, a ten-mile time trial from Port Bannatyne to Rhubodach and back, was won by Sean Childs in a time of 21 minutes and seven seconds, while the ladies’ winner was Toni McIntosh from Ayr, with a finishing time of 26 minutes and 20 seconds.
