Bute’s cricketers returned to action on Saturday after a two-week break for the Commonwealth Games - though it was visitors Victoria who were smiling at the end of the day after a record-breaking victory.

The Glasgow club, winners recently of the Scottish Small Clubs’ Cup, were rocking early on after the loss of two wickets in the first four overs - but recovered in style to post a WDCU league record of 523 runs, with 278 of them coming from the last 18 overs.

Bute lost their first wicket when Tim Stobart was bowled for 10, and their second when Richard Harding played on for 11; captain Craig Murray was the only other Bute player to reach double figures as Victoria bowled out their hosts for just 68 runs.
