Bute's Richard Crichton on his way to a hard-earned 87 not out during Saturday's Western Cup match against Shawholm in Rothesay.

Bute County Cricket Club’s hopes of ending their poor run of 2013 form were dashed on Saturday by a home defeat against Shawholm in the final round of group games in the Western Cup.

Richard Harding’s excellent 87 not out was the highlight of the hosts’ 40 overs, while Guy Crichton also pitched in with 37 after the early loss of opening batsmen Alan Peacock and Gary Dickinson as Bute finished on 203 for seven.

Shawholm’s run chase got off to the worst possible start when Crichton sent the visitors’ opening batsman back to the pavilion with the very first ball of the innings, but the Glasgow side - who were already sure of top spot in the group and a place in the quarter-finals - quickly steadied their ship and were more than three-quarters of the way to their target by the time the second wicket fell to Peacock’s bowling in the 25th over.

Peacock finished the afternoon with three wickets to his name, but Shawholm secured victory in style with two sixes and a four in the 35th over to confirm victory by five wickets.
