Bute County Cricket Club’s hopes of a consolation victory in their last home match of the WDCU Championship season were comprehensively shattered after a heavy defeat to Motherwell on Saturday.
Batting first, the Lanarkshire side raced away to a huge total of 412 runs - thought to be the highest 50-over total ever set at a match in Rothesay, and Motherwell’s highest-ever 50-overs score - though Bute did at least manage to bowl the visitors out before the end of their innings, sparing themselves from an even higher tally.
That left the island side facing an impossible task even before they took to the crease, which goes a long way to explaining their own total of just 76, amassed in only 28 overs before veteran stand-in Ian Downie was sent back to the pavilion.
Top scorers for Bute were opener Tim Stobart on 28 and Jonathan Mann on 22.
