BUTE’S indoor bowling season drew to an exciting close at Rothesay Pavilion on Thursday and Friday with the finals of the Isle of Bute Carpet Bowls Association’s annual open tournament.

The first winners were the mother-and-son duo of Joan and George Reynolds, who were four shots down going into the last end of their mixed pairs final against Nan Reynolds and Hugh Charker but managed to draw level before snatching victory in an extra end.

The ladies’ pairs final was won by Violet Westland and Renee Speirs, who retained the R.B. Wood Memorial Cup with a narrow 15-14 win over Helen Wood and Janice McLaughlin; the gents’ pairs final was rather more one-sided, with Alan Ewing and Gordon Shaw defeating Peter Thomson and Jack Paterson 24-7.

The last two finals on Friday evening were the ladies’ and gents’ singles; Violet Westland won her second trophy of the night by beating Agnes Connell 21-11, but Alan Ewing was unable to repeat the feat in a memorable gents’ final, which George Reynolds won 21-18.

More from the IOBCBA tournament, and a complete list of the season’s prize winners, in the new issue of The Buteman, on sale on Thursday, March 29.
