Now in its 94th year, the McMillan Cup was played for by rinks representing the Bute bowling clubs on Thursday, July 14.

At Ardbeg green on Tuesday, Rothesay Bowling Club defeated Craigmore Bowling Club and secured their place in the final against Ardbeg Bowling Club.

The final was played on the Craigmore green, and the weather was kind both for bowlers and spectators.

Rothesay got off to the better start and after two ends were five shots ahead. Ardbeg scored two shots at the next end. The next seven ends were pretty even, and with ten ends played, Rothesay held the advantage by one shot.

Leading 12 - 11, they gained another shot at the next end, now leading by 13 - 11. The Ardbeg team rallied and over next three ends, scored eight shots to take the lead with a score of 19 shots to 13.

The Rothesay lads came back and scored two singles over ends 15 and 16, leaving them four shots adrift on the final end. The last end saw Ardbeg score four shots to take the match by 23 shots to 15.

Before presenting the cup to the Ardbeg team, Bute Bowling Association President, John Preston, thanked Craigmore for the use of their green and the facilities laid on, with a vote of thanks to Hugh Yeamans for acting as umpire.

He congratulated both sets of players for a good hard fought game, played in a sporting manner, and after presenting the Rothesay team with the runners-up prizes, he presented the McMillan Cup to the Ardbeg team.
