It was a week of mixed fixtures for Bute Curling Club with a Club Championship, a Day League game and a Ladies Province game lined up.

The trophy at stake on Tuesday, March 11, at the Waterfront was the Macrae Cup. Three rinks gathered to play in the final club game of the season. They were Donnie MacLeod (skip), Donald Kinnear, Nancy Kinnear and Hugh Yeamans, Colin Sharp (skip), Jan Eccles, Margaret MacLeod with Douglas Macdonald playing in the first round, and Beck Reid (skip), Andy Eccles, Bill Stein and Peter Martin.

In what proved to be a tight competition, Donnie played Colin in the first game of five ends. The sides were lying peels at the fourth end, going into the final end with 3 shots each. Colin took the fifth end by a single shot to win his game.

The second game saw Beck play Donnie and once again it proved to be level at the fourth end, 3-3, with the fifth end going to Beck who won by 1 shot.

The third game saw Beck and Colin go head to head with the outcome of the competition resting on the results. In a repeat of the two previous games the score was level at the fourth end with Beck taking a single shot at the fifth end to win both her game and the competition. Well done, Beck!

As this was the final club competition the curlers retired to the Black Bull for supper on their return to the island.

The final Day League game was played on Wednesday, March 12, with Donald Kinnear (skip), Colin Sharp, Bill Stein and Nancy Kinnear turning out to play Dunoon Ladies skipped by Jean Laird.

At the outset, Dunoon took control of the game, taking the first four ends to lead by 8 shots going into the fifth end. Bute fought back to win the next two ends and narrow the gap to 8-5. The seventh end went to Dunoon increasing their lead to 10-5, however, a very strong end from Bute gave them 4 shots - almost overturning the result. Dunoon took the game by 10 shots to 9.

Thursday, March 13, saw Nancy Kinnear turn out for the third time in a week to play in what proved to be a fairly informal competition at Braehead for the Woodside Trophy. Beck Reid, on what was a very special birthday, skipped the rink with Barbara Dunn, Margaret MacLeod as well as Nancy Kinnear in support.

Other rinks were: Drimsynie skipped by Jean Ferguson, Dunoon skipped by Rosemary Benn and Tighnabruiach skipped by Issie Currie.

With three wins in the three short games Dunoon proved to be trophy winners with Tighnabruiach runners-up.

Following the competition, birthday cake in honour of Beck was enjoyed by everyone!
