Six Rothesay Bowling Club players qualified for the finals of the Bowls Scotland national championships in Ayr.

Agnes Connell and Haig Reynolds from Rothesay Bowling Club were knocked out of the Bowls Scotland national championships in the second round of the mixed pairs on Wednesday.

Agnes and Haig got their week off to a positive start with a 23-10 first round win over Inveresk BC from Musselburgh, but they were unable to sustain their challenge on Wednesday, losing out on a place in the quarter-finals after being beaten 23-15 by Bishopton.

Meanwhile, as this article is published the Rothesay ladies’ rink of Julie Gilchrist, Susan Selkirk, June Williams and Aileen Sloan are preparing for their first round tie in the competition against Dumfries BC, to be played at 5.30pm on Thursday.

* Closer to home, this week’s Bute Bowling Association gents’ triples final, for the Easton Trophy, has been postponed; the match was to have been played on Thursday, August 7, but torrential rain scuppered plans to play the semi-final on Tuesday night. An alternative date has yet to be arranged for the ties.

The Bute Bowling Association is also preparing to host its annual open tournament on the Rothesay, Craigmore and Ardbeg greens, with players expected to travel from all over Scotland to compete in the event.

The action begins this Sunday, August 10, with the finals due to be played at Rothesay Bowling Club on Saturday, August 16.

The cost of hosting this year’s tournament will be offset by the award of £950 to the Association from Argyll and Bute Council’s third sector grants fund, approved this week by members of the authority’s Bute and Cowal area committee.
